General Form of Baldness present in Men and Women

Androgenic alopecia or commonly called a genetic form of baldness is a common form of hair loss in both men and women. Baldness is a common disorder indicated by excessive hair loss. It is also associated with aging, heredity or changes in the hormones. There can be male pattern baldness (MPB) or female pattern baldness (FPB).

In men, this status is also known as male-pattern baldness. Hair sheds in a progressive manner in a well-defined pattern, initiating above both temples. As time progresses, the hairline recede to form a characteristic “M” shape. Hair also thins at the vertex (near the top of the head), often progressing to partial or complete baldness, and technically termed alopecia.

In women, The pattern of hair loss/hair shedding differs from male-pattern baldness. The hair becomes thinner all over the head, and the hairline does not recede in women. In women Androgenetic alopecia rarely results in complete baldness.

Statistics

Androgenetic alopecia is a general cause of hair loss in both men and women. This form of hair loss results in hair loss of an estimated 50 million men and 30 million women in the United States. In Delhi, there has been the upsurge in the number of patients suffering from male pattern baldness in recent years. Androgenetic alopecia can start as early as a person’s teens and risk increases as age progresses, more than 50 percent of men over age 50 have some degree of hair loss. In women, the possibility of hair loss is most common after menopause.

It was Norman Orentreich who discovered modern methods of hair transplant techniques in the year 1950. The advancement made in hair transplant technology in follicular hair transplantation has since fuelled the evolution of the practice.

Some important things to know about hair restoration are:

  1. Time: Many people have the presumption that hair restoration is a time-consuming process. But the reality is quite different as the minor surgical procedure usually takes around an hour or more. FUT is the minor invasive surgical technique which takes about an hour or two including the advanced Trichophytic closure to minimize the scar, the slivering of hair grafts may take 5 to 6 hours depending on the number of hair grafts. FUE technique useful for a lower number of grafts implantation usually takes more time than FUT, approximately 10-12 hours for 2500 grafts implantation as here the grafts are implanted one by one using micro drill device.
  2. Healing : Following hair restoration, patients may experience mild stretching or swelling in the scalp region and redness that heal at a much higher rate using basic medication (prescribed antibiotics). Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) has proven the excellent result in natural healing. The concentrated form of Plasma containing various growth factors when injected in bald region results in steady healing and skin rejuvenating effects.
  3. Candidate : The candidacy of hair restoration procedure has a wide range. While there are many presumptions that its men who usually undergo hair transplant, but according to ISHRS reports about 39% of hair restoration surgeries that take place are done on women. In the case of women, they generally have the thinning of the hair or hair loss problem, and they too are good candidates for restoration.
  4. Advancement : It has long been since Hair restoration has transcended in terms of technology and experience over the years. Today there are advanced hair transplant technology procedures that are used. These help to improve the outcome, as well as recovery times.
  5. Costs : The cost of hair restoration surgery depends on the needed grafts, the degree of baldness, the age, surgeon’s level of experience.
