India is one of the most rapidly developing nations in terms of economy and technology. In the recent decade, India has become one of the leading nations where foreign patients from western countries travel to receive treatment with high quality and at low cost. Hair transplant procedure is a common procedure underwent for restoration of hairs lost due to Androgenetic Alopecia. The number of patients undergoing hair transplant in India has been rapidly increasing from past few years. The reason could be due to increased prevalence of hair loss in young individuals and increased consciousness of the patients to have aesthetic looks. Also, tourists travel to India for hair transplant because of low hair transplant cost in India as compared to developed nations. Though, the quality of hair transplant in India is of international standard as the surgeons are highly qualified and worldwide recognised.
What is a hair transplant?
The hair transplant procedure is an aesthetic and cosmetic surgery performed by a plastic surgeon to transplant hair grafts from one area of the body to other using cosmetic surgical approach so that the transplant looks normal. The hair transplant is most commonly performed for restoration of scalp hairs lost due to Androgenetic Alopecia. However, thousands of patients undergo hair transplant for body hairs as well.
What is a safe donor area?
It is a horse shoe shaped area with hairs at the sides and back of head which have very less tendency to be affected by Androgenetic alopecia. The hairs in the safe donor area have somewhat different properties from other hairs on the scalp. These hairs are not sensitive to the male hormone, Androgen or DHT (Di-hydro testosterone) which is responsible for hair loss in Androgenetic Alopecia. Because of minimal sensitivity of hairs to DHT, these hairs have very less tendency to fall even at later stages of life. This property of hairs in safe donor area is utilised in Hair Transplant Procedure.
Techniques available for hair transplant in India
Generally there are two techniques widely utilised for hair transplant in India.
Follicular Unit transplant (FUT)
In this technique, a strip of hairs along with the skin is excised from the safe donor area. From this strip, the trained technicians dissect the hair grafts under magnification to minimise the graft transection rate. After dissection of hair grafts, the surgeon implants them at the recipient site into the slits made in the scalp. The hairs after transplantation grow naturally and have very less tendency to fall. At donor area, the site from where the skin strip is excised is sutured by the surgeon. In the past, a linear scar was formed at the donor area after healing, however, nowadays, Trichophytic closure is used to for suturing the wound with which the linear scar at the donor area is made successfully invisible.
This method is extremely suitable for patients with grade of baldness above Grade III because about 3500-4000 hair grafts can be extracted in a single session. Also, because the graft damage rate is very less (less than 1%) almost all the hair grafts extracted can be utilised for covering the bald areas.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
In this technique, unlike FUT where the harvesting of hair grafts from the scalp is done in a single step, in FUE, hair grafts are extracted individually using a motorised FUE punch. With this technique, the hair grafts from the safe donor area is harvested similar to cherry picking. This procedure is marketed as scar less because the scars formed with the FUE punch are very minute in size and not visible beneath among other hairs even on shortening the hairs. With this technique, extensive amount of hair grafts cannot be extracted because it can cause permanent visible damage to the donor area. Only a limited number of hair grafts should be extracted in this procedure. The overharvesting of donor area can lead to visible decreased hair density and increased chances of infection and necrosis.
What is the cost of hair transplant in India?
The hair transplant cost in India depends on a number of variables and the cost changes for each patient; the reason being every patient has different extent of hair loss and different medical history which changes the treatment plan in every patient. The hair transplant cost in India is charged on the basis of per graft charge. The average per graft charge is INR 30-100 depending on various variables. Following are discussed certain factors which are responsible for deciding the overall hair transplant cost in India:
From the above figure, this can be inferred that hair loss in a patient increases as the grading of baldness increases. As the area needed for hair transplant increases with the increasing grade of baldness, the number of hair grafts required to restore the bald areas on the scalp also increases. With the increased number of hair grafts needed for hair transplant, the cost of hair transplant increases.
As per the hair transplant cost in India, the FUE procedure is costlier as compared to FUT- procedure. Obvious reasons for this difference in price are that FUE procedure requires high end technical equipments to perform the procedure efficiently. In FUE procedure, a micro motor is required with FUE punches. The FUE punches are very costly as they are manufactured with utmost precision and with high quality material.
Nowadays, experienced and proficient surgeons in India have started employing combination technique of FUT and FUE to efficiently utilise the safe donor area without causing overharvesting to the donor area. Dr. Suneet Soni is one of the pioneer hair transplant surgeons who perform combination technique of hair transplant to gain good results in patients who have low density or thin hairs in the donor area.
