How is PRP formulated from patient’s blood?

PRP, as depicted by its name, Platelet rich plasma, is plasma obtained from patient’s blood and processed in such a way that platelets are five times more concentrated as compared to normal concentration of platelets in blood. The normal concentration of platelets in venous blood is approximately 2,00,000 per microliter. The concentration of platelets in PRP can exceed 10,00,000 per microliter. Our blood is made up of two main components, red blood cells (RBCs) and plasma. The plasma contains all other cells such as white blood cells (WBCs) and platelets that have high levels of growth factors. PRP has been widely used in medicine and surgery because it has high ability to promote wound healing. Growth factors present in platelets are vital in signalling skin cells to functions. When PRP is injected into the scalp of a patient with thinning hairs, the growth factors in it help by stimulating the activity of the hair follicles and promote the growth of new hair follicles.  Scientists have hypothesised that growth factors released from platelets act on the stem cells on the hair follicles, which stimulates development of new hair follicles and formation of new blood vessels to increase the blood supply. How is PRP performed?

The PRP treatment is performed as outpatient basis and it takes about 1-2 hours per patient. The patient can continue his /her normal routine after the treatment. Following are the steps followed during a PRP therapy for hair loss:

1. A venous blood sample (25-30 ml) is collected from the vein on the arm of the patient similar to the blood sample taken during a blood test
2. The collected sample is processed in a centrifugation machine
3. After 2 cycles of centrifugation, the PRP is separated from PPP (platelets poor plasma)
4. The concentration of platelets in PRP is checked using an autoanalyzer
5. After confirming the concentration of platelets in PRP is desirable, PRP is recovered into syringe
6. PRP can be then injected into the scalp after administering local anaesthesia
